Teletherapy
What is teletherapy?
Teletherapy is therapy provided remotely via an online platform. The prevalence of teletherapy has increased dramatically since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as many services were required to reduce or cancel in person appointments. Services provided via teletherapy must be of the same quality as those provided in person and are governed by the same code of ethics and conduct as in person services.
What does teletherapy for kids look like?
Teletherapy happens through a live, videoconference meeting - your child will see, hear and be able to interact and talk with the Speech Therapist.
Different tools, software, websites and activities are used depending on the age of the child and therapy targets. These are shared with you through screen sharing so your child can interact with, draw and type onto the materials. Just as activities are individually prepared for your child before each in person session, teletherapy activities are also individually prepared on a weekly basis and incorporate your child's interests as much as possible.

Is teletherapy effective?
Feedback from my own practice regarding teletherapy to date has been positive. While the evidence base for teletherapy is growing, telehealth is a relatively new field and research into telehealth has not kept pace with the technological and cultural changes that have occurred over the last decade. Research to date has concluded that telehealth is promising but more studies are needed.
Is it suitable for my child?
Teletherapy may not be appropriate for all children and all types of needs. If you are interested in teletherapy for your child, I am happy to discuss your child's individual circumstances with you.
What do I need?
- An appropriate device such as desktop, laptop or tablet.
- A stable internet connection.
- A private space that is quiet and well lit.
- A support person to assist in case of technology issues and to help your child interact during the session.
